How can I prepare for my dermatology appointment?

If coming for your first visit, please bring your insurance card, if applicable, and a legal guardian if you are under the age of 18. Please come prepared to provide your health history on your new patient paperwork as well.

What should I expect during my initial consultation?

Your first visit begins with a consultation with your board-certified dermatologist or advanced practice provider. Prior to care, we will get your health history and perform a clinical evaluation of the skin to determine which treatment options are the best fit. We will customize both a treatment plan and a skin care regimen if desired. Important pre- and post-treatment instructions will also be provided to accompany most treatments.

What insurances do you accept?

We accept a variety of major insurances for your skin care. We have examples of insurances we accept on our website. If you don’t see your insurance listed, please contact us and we will verify if we accept.

What is the difference between a deductible, copay and coinsurance?

All three are medical charges you must pay out of your own pocket, even if you have insurance. Deductibles are a specific amount you must accumulate and pay each year of covered health services before benefits are provided by your carrier. Plans may also have separate individual and family deductibles and/or deductibles for separate services. Copayments are a set fee the member pays to providers at the time services are provided. Copays are applied to office visits, emergency room visits, hospital admissions, etc. Coinsurance is a form of cost sharing. After your deductible has been met, plan will begin paying a percentage of your bills. The remaining amount, known as co-insurance, is the portion due by the patient.

What is causing my acne?

Acne is an extremely common dermatological condition which affects more than three million people a year. Acne results from clogged hair follicles under the skin and presets as a small to large red bump or bumps on the skin which can be painful. Acne can be embarrassing and may cause psychological effects to the patient. Yet, pinpointing exactly what causes the annoying red bumps can be difficult, as there are many factors that can contribute to acne. Factors that may contribute to your acne breakouts are: 

  • Age. Teenagers and young adults often experience acne more than their older counterparts. 
  • Excess oil production. When your skin creates too much sebum or oil, acne breakouts can occur. 
  • Accumulation of dead skin cells. Without washing and exfoliating your skin, dead skin cells can clog your follicle and cause a pimple. 
  • Bacterial infection in the follicle. Sometimes, bacteria enter the follicle and causing an infection. The skin reactions by creating a pimple.  
  • Hormonal changes. Going through puberty or pregnancy can cause hormones to fluctuate. This results in a breakout.  
  • Medications. Corticosteroids and lithium can contribute to breakouts.  
  • Diet. Eating foods with high sugar content, dairy products, and more may be to blame.  
  • Stress.  
  • Family history. When your family has a history of acne, you are more likely to experience it as well.  
  • Skin contact. If you touch your face to a dirty or oily surface, you may experience a breakout. 
  • Friction or pressure. Wearing tightfitting clothing or accessories can cause pressure and friction on the skin. 

How are Botox and Dysport different?

Botox has become a common term in our language due to its extreme popularity. However, with the addition of Dysport to U.S. markets, many patients are wondering what the differences are between these two products. Juvederm is the over encompassing term used for a collection of dermal fillers under the name. There are several types of Juvederm. Juvederm is mainly used in the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles and skin laxity

Am I eligible for Mohs surgery?

Mohs surgery is a procedure used to treat a wide range of skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell skin cancer and melanoma. Mohs is especially useful for people who have been diagnosed with a cancer that has a high risk of reoccurrence or have cancer in an area that that the patient wishes to preserve. Talk to your doctor to discuss whether Mohs is the right treatment for your skin cancer.
