Dilated Pores

What Are Dilated Pores?

We all have pores in our skin that allow the release of oil from the sebaceous glands. This helps keep our skin hydrated and moisturized. For most, pores are barely visible. But for some, their pores are dilated (or enlarged). This can make caring for your skin more difficult and require extra time and money. For some, the appearance of dilated pores can hurt their confidence and self-esteem.

Signs and Symptoms of Dilated Pores

Often dilated pores are most noticeable on the nose, chin, and forehead. As oil gets trapped, our nose pores can swell and appear wider than they actually are. This issue can be exacerbated if dry skin is also present. Blackheads frequently accompany dilated pores too.

Causes of Dilated Pores

  • Genetics play a large role in the appearance of dilated pores. Most people who experience this inherit it from their parents.
  • Age is also a factor. As we get older, our skin loses collagen and elastin, causing the structure of skin pores to change.
  • Frequent or excessive sun exposure can thicken our epidermal layer which can enlarge pores.
  • It’s been shown that lack of proper skincare and exfoliation can lead to this issue, with blackheads and other forms of acne enlarging pores to an extent.
