Scars

Scars are permanent changes in the skin due to inflammation or injury such as a surgical procedure or even cystic acne. While there are some treatments to minimize the appearance of scars, there are no options to remove scars entirely.

How Can Scars Be Treated?

  • Sun Avoidance: When there is inflammation in the skin, there can be residual pigmentation once that inflammation subsides, especially in patients of darker skin types. It is important to keep healing scars out of the sun to minimize the duration of this pigmentation. This can be done by covering it with a bandage, daily sunscreen application or sun protective clothing.
  • Silicone: One option that can minimize the appearance of certain types of scars is topical silicone gel or sheets. This treatment must be applied daily for four to six months to see benefit.
  • Keloid or hypertrophic scars: These are scars that heal with a firm raised texture. Cortisone injections into the scar performed in the office can soften the scar and flatten it to minimize the appearance, but will not impact the color or size. Multiple treatments may be necessary.
  • Acne scarring: Treatment for pigmentation and textural changes caused by acne include daily retinoid use, chemical peels, micro-needling and some laser treatments. Once your acne is controlled, meet with your dermatology provider to discuss available options.
