Sclerotherapy

Reduce the Appearance of Veins

Sclerotherapy treats uncomplicated spider veins and small varicose veins known as reticular veins.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure performed here in our office with a solution that is injected into spider veins and reticular veins. This is a minimally invasive procedure and the prescription medicine used to reduce the appearance of these veins is called Sotradecol.

Sclerotherapy treats uncomplicated spider veins (very small varicose veins less than or equal to 1 mm in diameter.) In addition, it treats uncomplicated small varicose veins (1 to 3 mm in diameter) known as reticular veins. A session can range between 10 minutes to an hour with one injection being administered per inch with multiple injections as needed. When the veins are injected with Sotradecol, it damages the cells lining the inside of blood vessels which causes the vessel to clot. After a series of sessions, the clotted vein will be replaced with tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Generally, it can take two to three treatments about a month apart for best results, but patients often see a big improvement after the first treatment and may not need additional sessions. The provider will be able to discuss during the consultation what type of resolution you will experience and how many sessions would be recommended for your individual case. Treated veins do not come back, but new veins may appear and will require additional treatment.

What Type of Results Can I Expect?

Individual results may vary depending on vein severity, skin tone and number of treatments. Most times all the veins will completely clear, or at least be significantly minimized. Follow our instructions for the recommended treatment protocol to achieve optimal results.

Is There Any Downtime Associated with the Procedure?

Our FDA-approved solution, Sotradecol, allows the procedure to be very well tolerated and virtually painless. Following the procedure, you will be asked to wear compression stockings for two weeks, 12 hours per day. There are no restrictions on exercise or activities, in fact it is good to walk around and stay active after this procedure. You should tell your provider about all medications you are taking prior to this procedure.
